Extraordinary Measures: A look back at 2010 Portland filming

The 2010 film Extraordinary Measures, starring Harrison Ford, Brendan Fraser and Keri Russell (great cast!), was filmed in and around Portland.

The movie tells the true story of a father working to develop a treatment for his children’s rare genetic disorder. Portland’s mix of residential neighborhoods, medical facilities, and recognizable city backdrops made it a natural fit for the film’s setting.

While Extraordinary Measures isn’t closely tied to specific, easily identifiable locations, parts of the city were used to represent Boston and other urban environments.

During filming, the working title was "The Untitled Crowley Project". The South Waterfront blog covered filming taking place in a few locations in 2009:

West Moreland ball fields on 99E (April)

OHSU, VA & Dornbecher Children's Hospital (June)

Up on The Hill

Oaks Park (June) - Fun fact, this site was also used in filming the 1993 orca movie, Free Willy.

The Nike campus in Beaverton was also used for filming, the first time this was allowed on campus. The screening was held at the Nike Stanford Theater and all proceeds went to Dornbecher.

Also filmed on the beach in Manzanita,

and Vancouver and Lake Oswego (according to IMDB).

Today, Portland continues to be a flexible filming location for both television and film, and Extraordinary Measures was another example of how the city quietly supports a wide range of productions.

TV Shows Filmed in Portland: Your Complete Guide

Portland, Oregon isn’t just a backdrop, it’s the main character. With its misty forests, quirky neighborhoods, dramatic bridges, and coffee shops that look custom-built for a brooding detective, Portland has become one of the most atmospheric filming hubs in the country.

Over the years, the city has hosted everything from supernatural dramas to sketch-comedy fever dreams to heist crews who somehow make our industrial warehouses look stylish. If you’ve ever watched a scene and thought, Wait, I’ve been there, chances are, you have. So whether you’re planning a visit or just love spotting familiar streets in your favorite episodes, here’s a look at the TV shows that have called Portland home, and how each one uses the city’s personality to its fullest.

1. Grimm

Where to watch: Amazon Prime, Peacock

Filmed: 2011–2017

Grimm is Portland’s crown jewel of television production. The entire six-season run was filmed in and around the city, using local forests, industrial corridors, and historic neighborhoods as the hidden world of the Wesen. Fans still visit the real-life exterior of Nick and Monroe’s homes, as well as iconic spots like Forest Park, Cathedral Park, and the St. Johns Bridge.

2. Portlandia

Where to watch: Netflix, Amazon Prime

This iconic sketch comedy series embraced Portland’s eccentric culture with satire and affection. Filmed across the city’s cafés, vintage shops, food carts, and indie streets, Portlandia showcased neighborhoods like Alberta, Hawthorne, and Mississippi Avenue.

The heist series moved production to Portland mid-run, transforming local warehouses, offices, and downtown buildings into globetrotting backdrops.

4. Leverage: Redemption

5. The Librarians

This adventure-fantasy series filmed nearly everything in Portland, from museum interiors to magical forests. Soundstages in Clackamas and local landmarks make frequent appearances.

6. Shrill

Where to watch: Hulu

7. Everything Sucks!

A nostalgic ’90s coming-of-age series shot in nearby Gresham and surrounding Portland suburbs.

8. Here and Now

Where to watch: Max

9. Top Chef: Portland

Where to watch: Peacock

Season 18 spotlighted Portland’s restaurants, farms, artisans, and culinary culture.

In the end, it’s no mystery why Hollywood keeps coming back to Portland. Nowhere else packs forest trails, river views, moody mountains, and a little urban grit into one place quite like we do. Add in our craftsman houses, industrial bridges, historic buildings, and a creative community that doesn’t blink when a film crew shows up, and you’ve got a city that practically films itself. With the mist, the moss, and that unmistakable Pacific Northwest mood, Portland just gets the assignment every time. Whether you love supernatural dramas or offbeat indie comedies, Portland’s influence on TV is unmistakable and worth exploring firsthand.
